The course covers HDD fundamentals, guidance systems, bore planning, steering principles, locating techniques, communication, troubleshooting, and the use of advancing technologies.

Course Overview

A two-day technical course focused on the knowledge and decision-making required to carry out accurate and safe HDD pilot bore operations. The course covers HDD fundamentals, guidance systems, bore planning, steering principles, locating techniques, communication, troubleshooting, and the use of advancing technologies.

2-Day Training Programme
Time: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Target Participants

  • New and experienced HDD pilots/operators
  • Locators and drill operators
  • Site supervisors
  • Contractors involved in HDD projects
  • Personnel supporting HDD bore navigation and operations

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the HDD pilot-boring process and approved bore plan.
  • Interpret key bore parameters such as entry angle, depth, alignment, bend radius, target points, and exit location.
  • Understand HDD guidance and locating information, including pitch, roll, depth readings, signal interference, and transmitter data.
  • Apply basic steering and correction principles while considering ground conditions and equipment limitations.
  • Improve communication between the locator and drill operator.
  • Identify common problems such as signal loss, unexpected utilities, ground changes, bore deviation, and fluid loss.
  • Know when to stop, reassess, verify, or escalate an operational issue.
  • Maintain accurate bore records for quality control and future reference.

Why It’s Worth Attending

  • Builds the technical foundation needed for safer and more accurate pilot operations.
  • Helps participants make better steering and navigation decisions.
  • Improves coordination between pilots, locators, supervisors, and site teams.
  • Develops awareness of common HDD risks and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Supports improved bore accuracy, productivity, and quality.
  • Includes training handouts for future reference.
  • Provides 20 CCD Points, supporting professional development.

Assessment & Certification

  • Assessment focuses on participants’ understanding of HDD guidance, bore planning, steering, locating, communication, and risk control.
  • Practical competence is further developed through supervised field experience and equipment-specific training.
  • Participants who successfully complete the course receive a Certificate of Achievement.
  • 20 CCD Points are provided, subject to the applicable certification/CCD requirements.
