Defensive Driving

Defensive Driving is a safety-focused course designed to improve hazard awareness, risk anticipation, decision-making, and responsible behaviour on the road. The programme helps drivers understand that safe driving requires more than vehicle control; it also involves observation, planning, maintaining safe margins, managing distractions, and adapting to changing traffic, weather, road, and vehicle conditions. It is suitable for company drivers, field personnel, supervisors, delivery staff, and employees who drive as part of their work.

Participants review common causes of road incidents, including speeding, unsafe following distance, fatigue, mobile phone use, poor observation, aggressive behaviour, incorrect overtaking, and failure to adjust to conditions. The course explains the defensive driving mindset: expect that other road users may make mistakes and maintain enough time and space to respond safely. Learners are introduced to systematic observation, mirror use, blind-spot awareness, safe positioning, and early identification of developing hazards.

The programme covers journey preparation and vehicle readiness. Participants discuss pre-drive checks, tyre condition, brakes, lights, load security, seat belts, documentation, and route planning. Fatigue management, rest breaks, medication, stress, and fitness to drive are also addressed. Drivers learn why reaction time and stopping distance increase with speed and why wet roads, poor visibility, heavy loads, and worn tyres require greater safety margins.
